University of IL Extension, Southern Seven Health Department, Massac Memorial Hospital, Anna Fellowship House, National Guard, Massac County Mental Health, Southern Illinois University, Shawnee Community College, Anna Fellowship House, University of Illinois Extension. and many other agencies bring programming to our after school students.
We assist students in community service projects and are able to work with the elderly by going to the local nursing homes and the Marion VA Nursing home. We want students to identify with this part of the community. We also strive to have programs around the school and community to assist students in understanding how they play a vital part in the community. The after school students have been active in sending care packages to our Armed Services overseas.
Our agency is prevention orientated and we do programs to assist students to develop with an appreciation of education and knowledge to pursue their careers later in life. We work with the community to assist in the services to students and with our staff, volunteers and community individuals, we are able to give students assistance in many areas including mentoring.
We have operated a quality program for many students giving them an opportunity to learn about the world about them and improve their academic grades. We provide speakers to give students more knowledge about the different career choices and help them better understand the value of education.
With our field trips to science centers, historic sites and other areas, they have been able to learn about new career opportunities and prepare themselves for a successful future. We feel that in the preventive programming we provide, many of these students will be able to have a better future and more self confidence. We appreciate your support of our program and all of the funds we receive go to direct services for students.
Reaching For Kids and Youth of Massac County, Inc. has been a non profit 50l(C3) organization since 2000. We have been offering after school programs in Massac County with the Illinois Department of Human Resources Teen REACH grant for 17 years.
Our organization depends upon this grant to fund our after school programs at Metropolis Elementary and at the the high School for High School and Junior High Students. . We have 60 to 70 students attending every day.
Our after school teachers work with students to improve their learning skills and give academic and homework assistance. We provide recreational, sports, crafts and cultural activities for the students. Many of these programs enhance the education and student development for the students. During the day, teachers/schools do not have time to do these programs and activities.
We also provide nutritional meals for the students, and this is very important to the parents especially in this time of job loss and reduced funds for the families. Many of our students are in a one parent household. The poverty rate at these schools is from 75% to 85%.
